An introduction to WordPress Website Development
Wordpress development has grew year on year, from initially starting life as a small blogging aid, WordPress has led the way and grew to be the Web Developers number 1 choice when it comes to Content Management Systems
Wordpress allows anyone, no matter technical ability or experience to be able to update their own website without touching a line of code.
Whenever we sit down to plan & develop a WordPress the website, the first few questions we ask ourselves are:
Who will be using this?
What is their technical competence?
How can we customise & develop WordPress to meet this individual’s needs?
Once we know the answers to these questions, then our WordPress Website Development team get to work.
The Wordpress Website Development process that we typically follow…
The first thing typically done is a WordPress basic installation, this can be done in under 5 minutes and some webhosts now even offer 1 click installation meaning it can be done in under 30 seconds!
One of the most commonly overlooked and second thing we do with WordPress is to secure it. By removing unnecessary installation files, Default Admin account and installing Sucuri Wordpress Security Plugin, we ensure WordPress is hacker proof from the very outset.
The third stage of our WordPress development process is to start implementing the theme. Some developers use pre-existing themes and change the imagery and content to make them different. 99.9% of the time we don’t do this and do the WordPress Website Development from the ground up without using any pre-existing themes, although at times it does have its benefits, as most of our designs are custom and follow no template style we usually stay away from this.
During the development phase we also begin to install plugins as and when required, so should someone want to use a ‘contact us’ form or add a carousel slider to their homepage or maybe even add a secure password protected members only area, we find the relevant plugins and implement them as necessary.
One of the really cool benefits of WordPress is that it can be set in such a way that it makes it difficult to break your website. Using the basic WordPress set up means you have to mess about the visual ‘What You See Is What You Get’ (WYSIWYG) editor which can cause issues if you start changing styles.
We like to take this to the extreme and give a client the option to edit paragraphs of text section by section.
The benefit here is, it is less overwhelming and our client knows that whatever text they put there will remain in the same style on the front end as it is hard coded and unbreakable.
WordPress Development is great fun, the majority of top websites use WordPress as the backbone to their website as it is so simple to use, it saves time, it saves stress and it makes things as easy as 1-2-3.
2020 Update
WordPress continues to still be the content management system of choice for many and with the popularity of plugins such as WPBakery and the alike, managing a WordPress website has never been easier.
Whilst WordPress has always strived to make life easier for those using it by offering a huge library of plugins, there were other issues such as security vulnerabilities and the need to mess with code with did cause it some problems.
WordPress now is one of the securest platforms on the market and plugins like Sucuri make it very easy to secure.
Now with plugins like WPBakery you can easily manage your website and move blocks around to lay out your page as you wish.
